    • We are certified by the Greater Chicago Food Depository to assist families in applying for SNAP (formerly, Food Stamps). We can help:
      • Determine if you qualify for SNAP
      • Answer your eligibility questions
      • Inform you of necessary documents
      • Submit application & documents on your behalf
      • Ensure a DHS caseworker contacts you in a timely manner
    • Medicaid
      • Our Government Resource Division helps those who are eligible for Medicaid apply for assistance.
    • LIHEAP (CEDA)
      • We proudly assist families in securing the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

How It Works:

  • Priority Period 1: September 1st
    • Households with a senior member age 60+
    • Households with a person receiving Disability Benefits (including Federal Social Security Disability benefits, Civil Service Disability or Federal Supplemental Security Income Benefits based on blindness or disability, Veterans Administration Disability benefits, Railroad Retirement Disability benefits, or any State Pension or payment based on blindness or disability.
  • Priority Period 2: October 1st
    • Households with 1 or more disconnected utilities
    • Households with children age 5 and under
    • Furnace program begins
  • Regular Application Period: November 1st
  • Bright Futures Mental Health Referral Network
    • Designed to help parents find services available for children needing mental health-related assessments, testing, advocacy and other special services, our network includes, but is not limited to:
      • Mental health assessments & testing
      • Behavior evaluations & therapy
      • LD evaluations, testing & therapy
      • Speech evaluations & therapy
      • Occupational therapy & evaluations
      • Vision evaluations & therapy
      • Physical therapy & evaluations
      • Auditory processing evaluations & therapy
      • Follow-up counseling
      • Medication management
      • ADHD & behavior-related coaching
      • Advocacy for special services & children with disabilities
      • Other special services & programs

How it works:

The child’s school will advocate for services and then advise the parents as to what their child needs. Then, parents can call the Chicago Chesed Fund to request information, referrals and follow-up.

This referral system is available to all families, is not based on income and is offered without charge.
